Let’s take a look at the creative backbone of the dystopian feature of CBS’s Person of Interest. If you are not familiar with the show, the video above explains pretty much the entire premise of the technology enveloped in the story line. “The Machine” helps predict crimes that two (and eventually a few more) vigilantes use to clean the streets of Manhattan. Originally, though, it was created by computer programmer and tech super-genius Harold Finch–one of those vigilantes–for government surveillance purposes to prevent terrorist attacks post-9/11.
Why is this important to look at? Well, you may comply with the motives for creating this supercomputer, but how similar are the values of our own government, and how far will they actually go to prevent real-life terrorist attacks? How close are we to this all-knowing spyware system, really?
